The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class William E. Crago (ASN: US-55061593), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date, Company A launched an attack against a well fortified enemy-held hill. As the unit advanced it was suddenly subjected to intense enemy grenade, mortar and small arms fire. The platoon, of which Private Crago was a member, was pinned down by constant fire from a machine gun emplacement. Realizing the situation, Private Crago, with complete disregard for his personal safety, attacked the position with hand grenades and rifle fire. He succeeded in routing the enemy before he was fatally wounded by an enemy round. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Crago reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
