The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Doyle A. Cox (ASN: RA-16274631), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 to 15 February 1951, in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. Company G was defending against a fierce enemy counterattack which was well coordinated with heavy mortar, self-propelled, and automatic weapons fire. Though the unit was successful in repelling several of these attacks, it was finally forced to withdraw to a more tenable position. Sergeant Cox, squad leader, voluntarily remained behind to provide covering fire. After the platoon had completed an orderly withdrawal, Sergeant Cox led a litter squad through the enemy fire to remove the wounded men. The gallant conduct displayed by Sergeant Cox reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
