The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] John B. Council, Jr. (ASN: US-51025689), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 24 November 1951, when Company A attacked the enemy on Hill 355, near Kowang-San, Korea, the Third Platoon initiated the assault and sustained casualties. Corporal Council, Third Platoon medical aidman, observing three seriously wounded men lying exposed to hostile fire, left his position of comparative safety and courageously crossed the exposed terrain under enemy observation and fire to reach the wounded men. After administering first aid, he successfully re-crossed the bullet-swept terrain, moving each man to a point of safety in the rear, where litter bearers were available. The inspiring gallantry and exemplary initiative displayed by Corporal Council reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
