The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Carl H. Coulter (ASN: 6293560), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Sojan-ni, Korea, on 3 February 1951. A numerically superior enemy force, supported by a heavy mortar and automatic weapons fire, fanatically assaulted Company L’s defensive positions and succeeded in overrunning its forward positions. Corporal Coulter, with complete disregard for personal safety, leaped from his fox hole and firing his automatic rifle from his hip, charged the assaulting enemy single-handedly. His fearless action completely surprised the enemy and his accurate rifle fire killed seven of the enemy before the remainder withdrew in confusion. Fighting his way to the company’s foremost position, he found that two men manning the position were dead. Again displaying extraordinary devotion to duty and aggressiveness he manned the gun and placed deadly fire on the withdrawing enemy. His accurate fire succeeded in killing many of the enemy and demoralized the remainder, causing them to flee from the area in utter disorder. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal [then Private First Class] Coulter, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
