Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 293 (July 18, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Huey Copeland (ASN: RA-17229070), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 May 1951, Company C attacked hostile positions on dominating terrain in the vicinity of Habae-jae, Korea. As the forward elements neared the objective, they encountered stiff enemy resistance and were subjected to incessant enemy fire. Completely disregarding the increasing intensity of the hostile fire sweeping the area, Sergeant Copeland, leader of a machine gun section attached to Company C, 1st Battalion, led his men to a forward position where maximum fire effectiveness was attained. Supported by accurate fire, the unit was able to secure the objective and drive the enemy from his emplacements. Sergeant Copeland’s exemplary gallantry and leadership reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
