Headquarters, 75th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 112 (May 1, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant John T. Cooney, Jr. (ASN: 0-517674), United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against the enemy while serving with Headquarters, 75th Infantry Division, from 1 to 24 April 1945, in Germany. During the pursuit in the Ruhr, while accompanying his division commander on frequent reconnaissance and visits to the most advanced elements, Lieutenant Cooney displayed conspicuous courage and tenacity. During the fight for Ickern he was subjected to severe small arms fire; at Holte his duties required him to pass several times through heavy enemy concentrations. At Minden and Meggen his vehicular party was fired upon by guerrilla parties. On every occasion this brave young officer performed his duties unflinchingly without regard for personal safety. The devotion to duty and fortitude displayed by Lieutenant Cooney enabled him to render material assistance to his commander.
