Headquarters, U.S. Forces, European Theater of Operations, General Orders No. 213 (August 29, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Air Corps) Francis L. Coolidge (ASN: 0-915905), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving with the Office of Strategic Services, working with French resistance forces, in France, from 1 August 1944 to 28 September 1944. After having been parachuted into France, Major Coolidge fulfilled with great coolness and ability his mission of organizing, training, and arming resistance forces in the Savoie Department, and of maintaining liaison with other missions in the region. He distinguished himself in leading these forces against enemy garrisons, which resulted in the eventual liberation of the area. Major Coolidge’s courageous actions throughout this dangerous mission were an inspiration to his associates, and reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
