The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Cavalry) Carl F. Cooke (ASN: 0-1012409), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Troop C, 87th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, in action against the enemy at Meijel, Holland. On 27 October 1944, Lieutenant Cooke’s squadron received the brunt of a powerful German attack consisting of armor and infantry in at least brigade size aimed at splitting British and American forces. The point of the attack struck his troop and forced the leading platoons to withdraw. Realizing the critical situation, he volunteered to lead his platoon in a counterattack. His unit stalled the attack and forced the enemy to withdraw with heavy casualties. During the action he was killed by an enemy sniper. Lieutenant Cooke’s courage and leadership were an inspiration to the entire squadron and reflect great credit upon himself and his organization.
