The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Michael Guy Cook, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile enemy force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Cook distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action while serving with Company B, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), on 7 February 1971, in the Republic of Vietnam. When his platoon came under heavy enemy fire from a hostile force of unknown size, Private First Class Cook, with complete disregard for his own safety, ran to the point of heaviest contact. Despite intense enemy resistance, Private First Class Cook remained at his strategic position and laid down devastating suppressive fire. His courageous efforts were instrumental in gaining fire superiority for his squad. Private First Class Cook’s gallantry in action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
