The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal William D. Considine (ASN: ER-57503909), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 September 1951 in the vicinity of Pia-ri, Korea. On this date, Corporal Considine’s platoon was assigned to assist Company E in the attack upon an enemy-held hill. During the advance the unit was subjected to intense enemy automatic weapons, mortar, and sniper fire, and their advance was halted by fire from a large enemy bunker. Immediately snipers began firing upon the men of Corporal Considine, forcing them to remain motionless. Realizing that his men were at the mercy of the snipers unless they were able to move to better positions, Corporal Considine voluntarily exposed himself to enemy fire and crawled forward towards the enemy bunker. He succeeded in throwing phosphorous and fragmentation grenades into the bunker, killing the enemy within. Corporal Considine’s heroic actions enabled his unit to move out of sniper range and successfully accomplish its mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Considine reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
