The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant James R. Conrad (ASN: RA-13347345), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 17 July 1951, Company F’s Second Platoon, occupying an outpost position in front of friendly lines on Hill 682, near Oe-dong, Korea, was attacked by a large enemy force shortly after midnight. In order to conceal its position from the foe, the unit was ordered to hold its fire until given a signal by the Platoon Leader and by the time it erupted into action, Sergeant Conrad’s squad had been pinned down by hostile automatic weapons and hand grenade fire. Realizing that his squad’s supply of grenades was slight, Sergeant Conrad crawled from his position through the embattled terrain to a supply point and secured a re-supply. He then made his way back to his unit and, moving about exposed to the heavy hostile fire, distributed the badly needed missiles to his comrades. He repeated this action several times and on one occasion killed two enemy soldiers whom he encountered. Sergeant Conrad’s gallant contribution to his unit’s defense reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
