The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant [then Private First Class] Stanley D. Combs (ASN: RA-15227112), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 10 October 1951 in the vicinity of Imokchong, Korea. On that date Company F was attacking enemy positions on Hill 800. Coming under enemy observation, the unit encountered intense automatic weapons, small arms, and grenade fire. Moving up the slope which was alive with hostile troops and well fortified bunkers, Sergeant Combs destroyed a bunker and took a position directly above it. From this commanding position he raked the slope with an automatic rifle, killing many enemy troops. An enemy counter-attack of superior numbers forced a withdrawal of his unit. Realizing three men had been wounded, Sergeant Combs, with complete disregard for his own safety, braved the hail of small arms fire to bring one wounded man to safety. He then returned to the fire-swept area to help the two other wounded men. As a result of Sergeant Combs’ gallantry the lives of men who might otherwise have died on the battlefield were saved. The loyal devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Combs reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
