The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major General Harry J. Collins (ASN: 0-7320), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding General, 42d Infantry Division, in action in France. On 15 March 1945, near Beipartsweiler, France, General Collins fearlessly exposed himself to intense hostile automatic weapons, mortar and artillery fire and made his way forward to the leading elements of his division whose attack had been slowed by fierce enemy resistance. With utter disregard for his own safety, this intrepid officer advanced through the heavily mined area and the withering hostile fire, contacted his battalion and regimental commanders at a forward battalion observation post and personally directed the attack. General Collins’ inspiring leadership was instrumental in a renewed and successful advance against the enemy; his heroic actions and unswerving devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
