The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant George H. Coldwell (ASN: RA-39124198), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 February 1953 in the vicinity of Podong, North Korea. On that date, Sergeant Coldwell received painful wounds as the result of a fire fight with enemy troops while his unit was engaged in a patrol action. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, he refused to be evacuated, but remained with his men, keeping them organized and encouraging them to greater efforts. With complete disregard for personal safety he moved among his men bolstering their spirits as the enemy closed in to almost point blank range. Even though the situation looked hopeless, Sergeant Coldwell inspired such a tremendous will to fight in his men that they renewed their efforts and inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy. While exposing himself to the murderous fire in order to direct the fire of his men, he was wounded a second time. Still refusing medical attention, Sergeant Coldwell continued to fight with his men until they were forced to withdraw due to overwhelming odds and the diminishing supply of ammunition. As a result of his courageous leadership, heavy casualties were inflicted upon the enemy and an orderly withdrawal was effected by the friendly patrol with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action and consummate devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Coldwell reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
