The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Phillip L. Coiner (ASN: ER-35785535), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 2d Engineer Combat Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 May 1951, near Ip-yong, Korea. Sergeant Coiner’s unit was part of an armored column when ambushed by an enemy force. Heavy casualties were suffered by our forces. After directing his own men to positions of safety, he organized litter teams and assisted in removing the wounded to safety. Despite heavy fire in his exposed position, he continued to supervise and aid his wounded comrades. Then endeavoring to establish communication with supporting infantry, he was killed by enemy fire. The courage and devotion to duty on the part of Sergeant Coiner reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
