The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Robert L. Cody (ASN: 0-55980), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of Company F, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 August 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On this date enemy forces had succeeded in blocking the only supply route available, isolating and endangering the entire 9th Infantry Regiment. Captain Cody was assigned the mission of destroying the roadblock and reopening the supply route. During the encounter with the well-entrenched hostile force, Captain Cody continually exposed himself to enemy mortar, machine gun and small arms fire as he advanced. Seeing the fearless action of their commander the men renewed the attack with the highest vigor. He led several assaults on hostile strong points, eliminating them and in a final effort led his troops in overrunning the enemy’s main position, thus gaining commanding positions. As a result numerous enemy casualties were inflicted and the supply route was reopened and the positions of the regiment were maintained. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Captain Cody reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
