The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Sherley N. Cochran (ASN: RA-13258160), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 3 March 1951 at Chiguri, Korea. Private Cochran was a member of a patrol with the mission of evacuating two members of his unit who had been wounded when their vehicle hit a land mine in the village of Chiguri. As the patrol entered the village it was attacked by a numerically superior enemy patrol employing small arms and hand grenades. Private Cochran, although painfully wounded, made his way through the intense enemy fire until he reached the house occupied by his wounded comrades and assisted them to safety. The gallantry displayed by Private Cochran reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
