The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Army) Herman B. Coble (ASN: 0-1329453), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Heavy Tank Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 20 May 1951, a tank task force, which was supporting the 2d Battalion, was suddenly attacked by a well-armed enemy force. During the initial exchange of fire, a round struck Lieutenant Coble’s tank and wounded him in the leg. Despite the withering enemy fire and ignoring his painful wounds, Lieutenant Coble stood in the open turret of his tank and courageously continued firing his machine gun, thereby inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. When his supply of ammunition was exhausted, he fired his carbine into the attacker’s ranks, killing several more enemy soldiers. Lieutenant Coble’s gallant actions materially aided in the eventual repulsion of the enemy and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
