Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 740 (November 19, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Billy Cobb (ASN: RA-14354702), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 September 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Corporal Cobb was a rifleman in a unit which was defending its position against the fanatical counterattacks of a numerically superior enemy force. During the course of this action he noticed that the machine gun, which was being used to hold off the brunt of the hostile attack was not firing due to a broken firing pin. Unable to repair the weapon himself, the machine gunner was calling for assistance. Without hesitation, Corporal Cobb left his covered position, and with complete disregard for his personal safety, crossed the fire-swept area to the machine gun emplacement. At this point he successfully replaced the firing pin, thus enabling the machine gunner to continue his action. Corporal Cobb then returned to his position and delivered accurate and effective fire on the hostile force, inflicting numerous casualties upon them and forcing the remainder to abandon their mission. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Cobb reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
