The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert L. Clift (ASN: US-52061793), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 19 September 1951 in the vicinity of Suim-myon, Korea. On that date Corporal Clift was a wireman with a unit which was being subjected to determined counterattacks by a numerically superior enemy force. During this action Corporal Clift observed a machine gun in the direct path of the onrushing enemy force which was abandoned by its crew. Although the position was under constant hostile fire he unhesitatingly advanced and operated the weapon. When the supply of ammunition was exhausted he obtained an automatic rifle and several grenades and with these he maintained his position. His withering fire forced hostile forces to abandon their mission and as they turned in retreat Corporal Clift assaulted them throwing grenades and firing his weapon, inflicting numerous casualties. His dauntless courage under fire was an inspiration to all who observed him and was directly responsible for repulsing the hostile force. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Clift reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
