The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Raymond L. Cassidy (ASN: 31454664), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 3 March 1945, while serving with the 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in the vicinity of Fluggerdorf, Germany. When two enemy machine guns were holding up the advance, Private First Class Cassidy worked his way to the house where the machine guns were set up, killing two of the enemy with a hand grenade and captured the remaining nine. Later his squad was pinned down by enemy machine gun fire. The intrepid Private Cassidy crawled through a heavily machine gunned area and with his rifle killed the three enemy gunners. Private Cassidy’s outstanding courage and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Private First Class Raymond L. Cassidy (ASN: 31454664), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in the vicinity of Dple, Germany, on 8 April 1945. Acting as squad leader, Private First Class Cassidy had skillfully led his squad in the attack when wounded, but courageous Private Cassidy rejected evacuation after having his wound dressed. When a Tiger Royal Tank hit the lead tank, Private Cassidy disregarded his own safety and removed the wounded to safety. When another tank was hit, he rushed forward to aid the men in spite of the exploding ammunition. He succeeded in removing most of the crew when another round killed him. His extreme devotion to duty, and exceptional courage, reflect the highest traditions of the military service.
