Cassidy (ASN: 31454664), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in the vicinity of Dple, Germany, on 8 April 1945. Acting as squad leader, Private First Class Cassidy had skillfully led his squad in the attack when wounded, but courageous Private Cassidy rejected evacuation after having his wound dressed. When a Tiger Royal Tank hit the lead tank, Private Cassidy disregarded his own safety and removed the wounded to safety. When another tank was hit, he rushed forward to aid the men in spite of the exploding ammunition. He succeeded in removing most of the crew when another round killed him.
