United States Military Academy Register of Graduates(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Brigadier General Carter Weldon Clarke, Jr. (ASN: 0-57314), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Brigadier General Clarke distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as a Brigade Commander of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), and later as Assistant Division Commander, 4th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in 1970 and 1971. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Brigadier General Clarke, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 326 (November 12, 1950)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Carter Weldon Clarke, Jr. (ASN: 0-57314), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy Korea. The Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon was reconnoitering enemy territory in the vicinity of Yechon, Korea, on 19 July 1950, when the lead vehicle was subjected to enemy machine gun and rifle fire which caused the occupants to seek cover. Observing that one of the occupants was wounded and lying on the road, Lieutenant Clarke manned a machine gun mounted on a jeep to provide covering fire as the vehicle to recover the casualty. Returning to the scene again, he assisted in the recovery of the abandoned jeep. Lieutenant Clarke’s conspicuous courage and military skill reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
