    Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 639 (October 27, 1951), Amended by G.O. 696 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Ralph T. Clark (ASN: 0-61541), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 38th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action from 26 thru 28 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On these dates, Lieutenant Clark, a forward observer, was assigned to Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, when the unit launched an attack to secure a strategic terrain feature held by the enemy. Due to poor visibility it was necessary for Lieutenant Clark to advance to the most forward position in order to direct accurate fire on the well-entrenched enemy force. Disregarding his personal safety, he remained in this position despite continuous hostile fire. When the attacking riflemen advanced and his ability as a forward observer was no longer needed, Lieutenant Clark joined the leading elements and on several occasions voluntarily led squads and platoons when their leaders were wounded and evacuated. His initiative and leadership proved instrumental in enabling the unit to secure its objective. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Clark reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
