The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] George A. Clark (ASN: RA-12264414), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 23 November 1951, friendly elements occupying positions on Hill 355, near Kowang-ni, Korea, were subjected to an intense, prolonged enemy barrage, which damaged bunkers and inflicted casualties among the defenders on the forward slope. Corporal Clark, assistant reconnaissance sergeant of the artillery’s forward observer team, upon seeing the men in distress, voluntarily rushed forward through the bursting shells and, heedless of his own safety, began digging men out of the caved-in bunkers. Forced to cease his efforts when the foe attacked in masses using dynamite and Bangalore torpedoes, Corporal Clark quickly seized a rifle and began delivering effective fire into the onrushing hostile troops. Resolutely moving closer to the defense barriers, he threw hand grenades at the enemy until the attack subsided in that sector. Deploying to the right, he and a comrade, upon finding a machine gun crew wounded and the weapon inactive, proceeded to man the gun, bringing intense fire to bear on the foe until shrapnel put the weapon out of action. Although shaken by the explosion, they courageously began firing with personal weapons, Corporal Clark personally accounting for five of the enemy. His rifle ammunition exhausted, he valorously moved forward to the perimeter and remained hurling hand grenades at the foe until their assault ceased. The gallant initiative and inspiring determination displayed by Corporal Clark reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
