The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Floyd E. Clark (ASN: US-52172963), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 2d Engineer Combat Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 and 20 July 1953 in the vicinity of Sangjin-ni, North Korea. On those dates, Private Clark, was a member of a wire laying detail in front of the Main Battle Positions, which was suddenly subjected to an intense enemy artillery and mortar barrage preparatory to an all-out enemy attack. Private Clark and his comrades took up defensive positions and returned the enemy’s fire in close hand-to-hand combat. In the ensuing struggle, Private Clark was wounded in the neck by an enemy grenade and while a comrade bandaged the painful wound, he continued to deliver accurate fire, personally killing 8 or 10 of the foe. Completely disregarding his personal safety, he fought until exhausted and had to be evacuated. By his active defense of the positions he greatly aided in the repulsion of the enemy attack and prevented them from throwing grenades into the bunkers, thus saving many lives. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Clark reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
