Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, General Orders No. 7893 (1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Errol Eugene Clark, United States Army, for gallantry in action. Major Clark distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 3 June 1970 while serving as District Senior Advisor, Hoia An District, Binh Dinh Province, Republic of Vietnam. On that date, Major Clark was accompanying Regional Forces Company 983 on a cordon and sweep operation to destroy suspected enemy positions when contact was made with an estimated Viet Cong platoon entrenched in a well-fortified area on the side of a mountain. When contact was initiated, he was directing the operation from a Command and Control Helicopter. He left the safety of the ship and rushed to the forefront of the battle to aid and coordinate a counterattack against the enemy. While so doing, he was wounded, but despite his wound, he continued to lead the attack and direct a devastating volume of fire upon the enemy. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Major Clark moved through the fire-swept area, assisting in the aid and evacuation of the wounded. During this process the enemy initiated another vigorous attack, thus hindering the safety of the medical evacuation. He immediately reorganized the Regional Forces companies and led another attack on the enemy positions, thus alleviating the threat to the medevac effort. The exemplary battlefield courage displayed by Major Clark was instrumental in turning a critical situation into a significant enemy defeat. Major Clark’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of United States Army and reflects great credit upon himself, and the military service.
