The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Charles Clark (ASN: RA-14004466), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 24th Reconnaissance Company, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Chakchong, Korea, on 1 November 1950. During a road reconnaissance his company encountered approximately 600 troops in uniform not previously seen by his unit. In order to ascertain their identity Sergeant Clark went forward to a position 50 yards from their column. Upon ascertaining that they were enemy, Sergeant Clark remained on top of a hill in an exposed position to direct and coordinate his company fire. In spite of the intense enemy fire in the ensuing fire fight and the fact that another man at his position was killed by small arms fire, he remained at his dangerously exposed position and, through the accuracy of his directed fire, the enemy received 100 casualties. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Master Sergeant Clark, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
