The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] James F. Clancy (ASN: US-51069911), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 23 September 1951 in the vicinity of Hanjon-ni, Korea. On this date elements of Company F were attacking strategic enemy-held positions on Hill 931, center of “Heartbreak Ridge”. In the course of this action, the unit encountered heavy hostile resistance and fire from a concealed enemy machine gun halted its advance, threatening the entire company. Sergeant Clancy, realizing the seriousness of the situation and although painfully wounded, crawled through the intense enemy fire until within a few yards of the hostile machine gun emplacement. Standing in direct face of the enemy, he threw hand grenades into the bunker, successfully destroying it and killing its occupants. Returning to his men he rallied them forward and, inspired by Sergeant Clancy’s fearless action, they continued on to rout the hostile forces. His valor was outstanding on a field of battle where bravery was common and sided immeasurably to the final conquest of Hill 931. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Clancy was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
