The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Richard H. Sievwright (ASN: 0-1338867), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 25th Infantry Regiment, then attached to the 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Hadong, Korea, on 27 – 28 July 1950. An enemy force of overwhelming numbers attacked from high ground and soon forced his battalion to withdraw. First Lieutenant Sievwright ordered the First and Second Platoons to disengage while the Third Platoon acted as a covering force. After the two platoons had safely completed the maneuver First Lieutenant Sievwright, displaying outstanding devotion to duty, when forward through intense fire to the former position to search out any wounded men who might have been unable to complete the move. Fin ding the area clear he returned to the Third Platoon only to find it completely surrounded. Skillfully deploying the men he led them in the fight to escape encirclement and guided them through areas held by ethe enemy for a distance of over 12 miles to the Yellow Sea where he secured surface transportation to the Port of Pusan. First Lieutenant Sievwright’s gallant actions, complete devotion to duty, and outstanding leadership reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Infantry.
