The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Emilio J. Ciampichini (ASN: RA-13444846), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 16 April 1953, a patrol of Company C, 1st Battalion, had the mission of entering enemy-held territory in the vicinity of Unjang-Ni, Korea, to obtain information for intelligence purposes. Soon after the patrol was out they were subjected to an attack by three reinforced platoons of enemy forces. During the height of the attack Private Ciampichini took command of a group of men. Many of the men were hit by the intense fire of the enemy and called for assistance. Private Ciampichini rushed about the area giving medical aid and consoling the wounded. Time and again Private Ciampichini fought off the foe with whatever firearm he could obtain. He remained in the area until all the wounded men were cared for and evacuated. Private Ciampichini’s outstanding gallantry and untiring devotion to duty and to his comrades reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
