Action Date:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Arthur B. Chun (ASN: 0-343577), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer, 3d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 July 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. On that date, Company E was pinned down by heavy enemy mortar fire and was making little headway. Colonel Chun, while making a reconnaissance prior to moving K Company of his battalion up to assist in the attack, came upon large groups of E Company taking cover. He reorganized them and urged them to continue the attack, which was done with little success. He then proceeded with his own K Company, across the fire-swept approach road to “Old Baldy”, and continued the attack. Later, when K Company ran into heavy mortar and artillery fire, he again reorganized the company and pushed it forward. At this time he was wounded in four places and evacuated. While in the Aid Station, he insisted that he remain with his battalion because he felt it needed him if it was to be successful in the attack. The gallantry in action displayed by Colonel Chun is in keeping with the highest traditions of the profession of arms and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
