Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 71 (April 1, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Stephen Albion Day (ASN: 0-27810), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company (then Company E), 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy from 31 August 1950 to 2 September 1950 in the vicinity of Tugok, Korea. During that period the enemy was crossing the Naktong River in overwhelming numbers, and had forced our troops to withdraw. Captain Day constantly moved back and forth through the intense enemy fire to distribute ammunition and encourage his men. While the company was effecting a withdrawal the company officers became casualties, and Captain Day assumed command. He organized a small force to provide covering fire for the remainder of the company, and repeatedly exposed himself to the intense enemy fire to assist in carrying the wounded to positions of safety. When he arrived at the new company command post and found it under attack, he placed the wounded on vehicles for evacuation and led the company in a seven mile march to join the rest of the battalion. The next day, after receiving arms, ammunition and replacements, he led an attack to regain the lost ground. His intrepidity, keen judgment and devotion to duty and to his men reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
