The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Anthony Chrzanowski (ASN: 0-1284661), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Heavy Tank Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 10 February 1951, near Wonchon, Korea, a task force, under the command of Captain Chrzanowski, moved thirteen miles into enemy-held territory for the purpose of feeling out the strength of the enemy and learning his dispositions. While searching for a crossing site on the Han River, his tank column was brought under a heavy enemy mortar barrage, in addition to intense fire from anti-tank buns on the opposite shore. Hoping to be able to spot the operations post that was directing the enemy fire, Captain Chrzanowski ordered his other tanks to “button up” while he remained standing in his open turret. In this open and exposed position, he was able to pick out the enemy operations post and destroy it before the anti-tank guns were able accurately to engage his force. Only after the enemy anti-tank guns were destroyed and he had completed his mission did he order his force to withdraw. Captain Chrzanowski’s gallantry, determined leadership, and professional skill reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
