The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Gene H. Chisum (ASN: ER-18223433), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 March 1951, in the vicinity of Yangjimal, Korea. On that date he was a member of an infantry unit which had the mission of attacking an enemy-held hill. When his platoon advanced toward its objective, it was subjected to intense enemy machine gun and mortar fire, which pinned it down. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Corporal Chisum dashed across open terrain and advanced to higher ground from which he could get a better view of the enemy’s machine gun position. From this exposed position he opened fire with his automatic rifle, and so effective was the fire he delivered that the enemy gun was knocked out of action. His courageous action contributed greatly to the success of his unit in obtaining its objective. The gallant conduct of Corporal Chisum reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
