The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Theodore E. Chiodo (ASN: RA-13286594), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy as a member of Company M, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, on 15 September 1950 near Shindo, Korea. While his machine gun section was assigned the mission of supporting an infantry company in a defense position, Sergeant Chiodo and a machine gunner, during a banzai attack, were wounded by enemy fire. Disregarding his own safety and the severe pain of his wound, Sergeant Chiodo rendered emergency medical treatment to his gunner until the enemy attempted to overrun his position. Then courageously from an exposed position, Sergeant Chiodo fought off the enemy with his carbine and hand grenades until the attack was repulsed. His fearless behavior and supreme devotion to duty prevented the machine gun position from falling into enemy hands and enabled his company to hold their position. Sergeant Chiodo’s gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
