The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry), [then Major] Clyde C. Childress (ASN: 0-371217), United States Army, for gallantry in action while commanding Philippine Guerilla Forces in the Philippine Islands on 17 March 1944. Before the arrival of American troops on Mindanao, Philippine Islands, a large enemy force supported by two aircraft attacked a guerilla-occupied hill and, after 24 hours of bitter fighting, forced the defenders to withdraw. Reorganizing his troops, Colonel Childress, by his heroic leadership, inspired his men to their greatest efforts, and led them in a counter-attack. Constantly exposed to enemy fire and, on several occasions manning a 37-mm. gun, he directed his men in routing the Japanese and recapturing the strategic hill position, thereby frustrating the enemy advance, and enabling the guerrilla forces to save vital supplies and intelligence records. By his outstanding courage and aggressive leadership, Colonel Childress made a noteworthy contribution to the heroic defense of the Philippine Islands. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
