The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lindsey Childress (ASN: RA-17307971), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 October 1951 in the vicinity of Tondul, Korea. On this date during an assault on enemy positions, Company E encountered heavy hostile resistance. Disregarding the intense enemy fire, Private Childress, point man in the attack, continued forward alone and when friendly elements launched several air-strikes he took cover in an enemy bunker, despite the fact that it was subjected to fire from friendly aircraft. When the word to continue the attack was given he rejoined his unit. Immediately he placed a marking panel on his back and unhesitatingly took the lead to mark the foremost elements, preventing them from being bombed and strafed by friendly planes. Although in full view of enemy observation and fire, he remained in position until wounded by hostile fire. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Private Childress on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
