The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Angelo R. Chianese (ASN: RA-11184853), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 22 July 1951, while with a swimming party of men from Battery B on the south bank of the Hant’an River, a soldier was unexpectedly swept under by the swift current and began to call for help. Sergeant Chianese, upon hearing the cries of the drowning man, quickly plunged into the water and vigorously swam about 75 yards to his aid. As he attempted to carry the hapless soldier to shore, the latter, panic-stricken, began to struggle wildly, and it was with only the greatest tenacity that Sergeant Chianese was able to subdue him and stay above the swirling water, until other men arrived, aiding him to complete the rescue. Sergeant Chianese’s selfless heroism saved the life of a fellow soldier and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
