The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George Chavez (ASN: US-18309731), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date, during an assault on an enemy-held hill, Company K was halted by intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire. As fire from an enemy machine gun had his platoon pinned down, Private Chavez, with disregard for his personal safety, advanced upon the emplacement and destroyed it. Private Chavez, still exposing himself to enemy fire, moved to the reverse slope of the hill and laid down a base of fire to protect his advancing comrades. Private Chavez’s heroic actions enabled his platoon to advance and secure its objective. The gallantry in action demonstrated by Private Chavez reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
