The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fourth Grade Nicholas Chaplick (ASN: 16002526), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with Company **, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On ** May 1943 in Tunisia, Technician Fourth Grade Chaplick, on duty as a cook, seeing a fellow soldier with his clothes afire, caused when he accidentally spilled gasoline on himself while lighting a stove used for heating water for the purpose of washing mess kits, running in panic, grabbed a mattress cover and overtaking the man extinguished the flames thus saving him from severe burns and in all probability saving his life. As a result of this heroic act, Technician Fourth Grade Chaplick suffered burns on his hands and arms. Technician Fourth Grade Chaplick’s actions were in keeping with the finest traditions of the United States Military Service.
