The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Elmer Milford Chandler (ASN: RA-12335988), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 23-24 November 1951, “F” Company’s positions near Kowang-san, Korea, were subjected to an intense shelling by enemy artillery and mortars. When the barrage lifted, hostile infantry attacked, but its initial assault was repulsed. They then withdrew and after reorganizing again charged the unit’s perimeter. Corporal Chandler, whose lethal automatic weapons fire had been instrumental in containing the first attack, again found his section of the line heavily assaulted and, seeing the enemy pouring through a gap in the barbed wire defenses, placed devastating fire upon the hostile infantrymen. Although wounded, he continued to maintain his hazardous position, inflicting numerous casualties upon the foe. When his supply of ammunition ran out, he fearlessly dashed back and forth across the embattled terrain to secure a re-supply. After returning to his position he continued to direct steady and accurate fire upon the enemy, until the latter retreated. Corporal Chandler’s gallant and resolute conduct reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
