Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 121 (May 27, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Carl A. Chandler (ASN: ER-12115774), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 March 1951 in the vicinity of Nelbunbau, Korea. On that date his company was assaulting enemy positions on Hill 821. When, in the course of the attack, communications with the mortars in the rear were severed by enemy fire, Sergeant Chandler as mortar forward observer, voluntarily joined a rifle platoon in an assault on the hill. Completely disregarding his own safety, he braved the hail of enemy fire as he delivered heavy rifle fire upon the enemy. After the first assault was slowed down, he organized and personally led a second charge against the entrenched enemy. Inspired by his exemplary courage the platoon succeeded in gaining the objective in this second effort. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Chandler reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
