The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Daniel Lee McBride (ASN: RA-18868715), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Four McBride distinguished himself by intrepid actions on 21 February 1970, while serving with Company G (Ranger), 75th Infantry, Americal Division. On that date, Ranger Team ILLINOIS was on a reconnaissance mission west of Landing Zone Stinson when it was assaulted by a numerically superior enemy force. Reacting immediately to the urgency of the situation, Specialist McBride engaged the insurgents from his exposed position while the remainder of the vastly outnumbered team took evasive action. Despite the danger involved, Specialist McBride then assumed an advance position and led his fellow soldiers through close range contact with the insurgents in thick underbrush. While he was engaging the hostile force, Specialist McBride was seriously wounded by an enemy round. Refusing to endanger the lives of his fellow soldiers, he struggled to his feet and gallantly continued to lead the team to the landing zone. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he then engaged the insurgents with highly effective suppressive fire while an extraction helicopter landed. Continuing to deny himself medical attention, Specialist McBride refused to be placed on the aircraft until all of his comrades were aboard. Through his timely and courageous actions, he was instrumental in preventing friendly casualties and served as an inspiration to his entire unit. Specialist Four McBride’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division and the United States Army.
