The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William E. Chamblin (ASN: 0-1334547), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 August 1951 in the vicinity of Pia-ri, Korea. On this date Lieutenant Chamblin’s 81-mm. mortar section was attached to Company F as riflemen, when the unit was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force supported by intense mortar and artillery fire. This action, being the first for his men, gave Lieutenant Chamblin an important job of checking their welfare and morale. Disregarding the intense hostile fire, he continually exposed himself circulating among his men, lending words of encouragement and directing their fire. During one of his many trips, he was painfully wounded by a shell fragment, but refused to be evacuated until the crucial period was over. Lieutenant Chamblin’s courage, initiative and prompt assumption of responsibility, aided materially in the successful defense of his unit’s position. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Chamblin on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
