The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fifth Class Floyd G. Talley, United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fifth Class Talley distinguished himself by intrepid actions on 6 December 1969 while serving as a Medical Aidman with Company D, 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, Americal Division. On that date, the company was conducting a reconnaissance in force mission in Hua Duc province when the point element came under intense enemy machinegun fire and suffered several casualties. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Specialist Fifth Class Talley, taking immediate action, rushed through the hostile barrage to the position of a wounded comrade. Despite the enemy fusillade directed at him, he administered first aid to his fellow soldier and carried him back to safety. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Specialist Fifth Class Talley again braved the hostile fire as he moved toward his other wounded comrades. At this time, Specialist Fifth Class Talley came under additional fire and was critically wounded by the intense enemy barrage. His timely and courageous actions were responsible for saving the life of a comrade and served as an inspiration to his entire company. Specialist Fifth Class Talley’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflected great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
