The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant [then Second Lieutenant] John F. Brady (ASN: 0-1168575), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 93d Armored Field Artillery Battalion. On the morning of 1 January 1944, near Radicoza, Italy, Lieutenant Brady was artillery observer with a company of the 3d Regiment, 1st Special Service Force, which was making an attack on Hill 820. Shortly after the attack jumped off, Lieutenant Brady was called to the top of the hill by the Company Commander where he was immediately pinned down by rifle fire and a machine gun less than fifty yards away. Lieutenant Brady was asked to place artillery fire upon a counterattacking force that had split the SSF Company. After having his radio net up, Lieutenant Brady, in order to see the enemy in the draw below him, and with complete disregard for his own safety, stood up in the midst of the intense rifle and machine gun fire and placed fast, accurate artillery fire on the enemy, completely routing the counter-attacking force. He then remained at his post, delivering accurate artillery fire on the enemy, until all enemy had been mopped up by the SSF. Lieutenant Brady’s keen attention to duty, complete disregard of personal danger and skill in delivering timely and accurate fire reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the armed forces of the United States.
