The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Billy Clayton Chambers (ASN: 15934461), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Chambers distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 27 April 1969, while serving as a machine gunner with Company D, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a reconnaissance in force mission in Binh Duong Province, Republic of Vietnam. When another platoon became heavily engaged with a large enemy force and sustained several casualties, his platoon moved to the contact area to aid the beleaguered element. With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Chambers moved to a forward position and placed accurate suppressive fire on the enemy positions enabling the wounded soldiers to be evacuated. Running out of ammunition he crawled to find more ammunition for his machine gun. Returning to the contact area Specialist Chambers exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he engaged an enemy bunker. Unable to effectively engage the fortification, he began to maneuver to a more advantageous position. While attempting to engage the emplacement, Specialist Chambers was mortally wounded. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
