The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Private First Class] Charles C. Chaloupka (ASN: US-52151913), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 4 September 1952, elements of Company E, 2d Battalion, of which Sergeant Chaloupka was a member, was assigned the mission of assaulting and destroying strongly fortified hostile positions in the vicinity of Koyangdae, Korea. Due to the nature of the terrain, the assault element was grouped closely together upon reaching the objective. When they were subjected to hostile small arms and grenade fire from a nearby bunker, Sergeant Chaloupka advanced to within yards of the bunker, firing into the aperture. Although wounded by hostile concussion and fragmentation grenades, he continued firing until the assault element could disperse and gain fire superiority. As a result of his actions, the mission was successfully accomplished with minimum friendly casualties. Sergeant Chaloupka’s outstanding gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
