The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Robert Louis Caudle (ASN: RA-18334421), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 19 September 1950, a rifle company making an attack on a strongly fortified enemy position in the vicinity of Chindong-ni, Korea, was subjected to intense harassing machine gun fire from a ridge on its right flank. Despite the heavy distracting fire, Sergeant Caudle continued to lead his squad from a forward position. Firing his rifle and throwing hand grenades, he knocked out two submachine guns. He so demoralized the enemy by his continuous advance in the face of heavy fire that they abandoned the objective and fled. Sergeant Caudle’s outstanding courage, aggressive leadership and staunch devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
